Walking, lifting and foot spreading to reduce the impact of OA.

Speaking of walking–> my mileage is getting back to normal when it comes to the pups after battling a flare up of osteoarthritis on my right knee. Personally I tore and had my ACL repaired the year I graduated from college. Then when playing baseball and coaching U-14s about 14 years later, I discovered that same knee was missing the ACL and had it repaired again. Since then I’ve played several more years of soccer and have continued to referee for the past 15 years. Genetically speaking– If you knew my grandfather you will know that he battled with OA from age 70-something until he passed in his mid 90’s. My mom did knee replacement surgery after retiring from teaching.

I’ve been doing rehab to make sure my muscles are balanced and not contributing to the OA flare up. The cortisone allowed me to get back to a structured work out program, swim time, Peloton time and more rowing. I’ve cut back my on field referee load by only accepting artificial turf fields until these spring storms are over, modifying my stride pattern, using an off loader brace and utilizing zero drop shoes so my foot can properly handle the load. I’ve also been doing some research to see where I go next as I work with my Ortho PA. I’m going to share a few videos and podcasts below. There will be a commitment in the next few months to do some hands on work with our local PT. After all we need to do some dancing at DMB this summer, SUP up river in the morning and continue with Crawford’s Peloton and Place.

Life changes to start the spring soccer season.
