I once started to forget how people demonized others that were not like them.
I realized that if the bully pulpit was muted in the United States we would focus on spreading light, hope and love around the world. I began to write about this country during 2023 when I started getting my coffee from Belle and Atlas. The coffee came with a story. The coffee told a little story about the people and the country where the coffee was grown. The more we understand others who are not like us, the more we realize that we are all sharing in humanity.
Let’s learn about this month’s coffee of the world from Honduras. Thanks to Annabelle we are drinking beans harvested from the Republic of Honduras in Central America. Honduras has Pacific Ocean waters to its southern borders and the Caribbean Sea to its northern border. The 2022 population was around 9.5 million people, that’s less than the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The main industry of Honduras is agriculture. There was major government investment in agriculture and coffee after Hurricane Mitch in 1998.
If you take a western Caribbean cruise you will have likely be routed toward the city of Roatan as a port of call.
There is an American corporate and military history that goes back to 1912 . Our corporations and government carved up agricultural spaces for American fruit production. The United States also developed infrastructure for the transportation of goods for export to the states. The current book I’m reading talks about two migrant girls who are headed to Estados Unidos. The two sisters Solidad and Rebecca flee from San Pedro Sula (800,000-900,000) the second largest city of Honduras. This country has been impacted since the 1980s when old mother Reagan, the Ronald–POTUS 40– declared a war on drugs, but chose to import them into our country to fund his war against the Contras. Amazing how the Don’t Do Drugs era has now come full circle on the country of Honduras. Now the country is run by drugs and cartels. This is the reason the people from Honduras have been seeking refuge in el Norte. The crime of the gangs have become stronger in certain cities than law enforcement.
