Ref Life: Mentoring Item- Football Rules App for new referees.

Upon further review the official IFAB Laws of the Game App is amazing for explaining the laws of soccer. Once you have several years as a football official you will have moments where you will need to look up a law or dig deeper into a situation and find the suggestions. The official IFAB LOTG app has a lot of detail. If it were a physical book it would be hundreds of pages.

As a new referee it is just too much information. Upon learning from David Gerson @refsneedlovetoo the Football Rules app is a much simpler version of the laws for green badge grass roots referees in the United States. When I first started a long time ago US Soccer had a cartoon version of the LOTG in a 30 page comic book. That was a long time ago. Now their is an app Football Rules.

Yes it is an app.

Cover page of a guide titled 'FOOTBALL RULES' featuring the subtitle 'Simplified Laws of the Game' and a graphic of a football.

Let’s be honest the LOTG are very lengthy and may be overwhelming for a new referee. This is why having a simplified LOTG app becomes a useful tool. I also encourange new referees to read and search for information from experienced referees.

A screenshot of a document titled 'Football Rules - Other Offences / Arguing', discussing the concept of dissent in football, how referees respond to arguing, and the consequences of showing dissent such as receiving yellow or red cards.

Why do I share these sites? Let’s just say over the last month I’ve had many phone calls from friends, family and neighbors who had lots of questions after watching the 2026 Global Men’s Soccer Tournament. I’m glad nobody heard the banned chant from the Mexican fans in Azteca. Thank you Mexico for keeping it classy on goal kicks.

Let’s talk about red cards. Let’s talk about VAR. if you have a question from this tournament send me a response and I’ll try to find you an answer.

To read more about what it takes to protect this great game and manage situations here are two books in my collection.

You may recognize Collina from his appearances on social media during the 2026 tournament.
