When football resembles the real world. . too much.

What does sport do for you?

Is it an escape from everyday life?

Maybe it’s something you share with your family and friends even if they have moved away.

Or is it the sense of belonging to a united community?

Could it be the part that you were played it in your younger days or still play it now?

Growing up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s I was surrounded by sport. Pittsburgh was called the City of Champions after our winning baseball and American Football teams. When Three Rivers Stadium was built both the Pirates and Steelers called it home. The championships started shortly after their residency at Three Rivers. The Pittsburgh Football Club immediately won four World Championships, then picked up another in the 1990s.

You will want to take note that the Pittsburgh Baseball Club won a World Series since 1970 and again in 1979. Since that time they have been the laughing stock of the league. In 2025 their owner Bob Nutting is an entertainment businessman. Mr. Nutting has never given his General Manager the resources to acquire free agents. He also has never chosen to sign a top draft pick beyond their rookie contract. His picture is currently in the Pittsburgh Baseball Dictionary as Loser.

Anywhere you go in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania you will see black and gold. It is the identity of our sports teams and our city. We are Penguins, Steelers, Pirates, Riveters and Riverhounds. No Somos Gallos.

Somos Gallos

In Mexico, there is really only one sport. In Argentina there is really one sport. In England there is one sport. In Germany there is only football. Italy lives football. Canada is all about hockey. In France there is red, white, blue and football.

The world of football is truly one world, one game, one unity around football. There is one World Cup for both men and women. We are going to host the 2026 World Cup between the US, Mexico and Canada according to FIFA.

Somos Gallos.

The world game has always had some extra passion that most of the United States wasn’t aware of before Messi came to Miami. If you have watched Messi, you know he has his own bodyguard at games. He wasn’t sure the stadium security was good enough here in the United States for his passionate supporters.

Somos Gallos.

Over the last few years there are several special headlines from Liga MX.

Somos Gallos.

Liga MX has been trying to collaborate with MLS to broaden its fan base. Including its perspective and respect for humanity in general. Meanwhile the current Executive Branch of the United States government does not see every human as equal. There are invasions by border patrol nightly at the Presidents request.

When I visited Leslie in Mexico I asked if it would be a possible to watch a game in person and even the locals didn’t seem willing to make the hour drive to go to the stadium. The passion of football in Mexico sometimes forgets that we are all one.

On March 5, 2022, during a match between Querétaro and Atlas, a riot broke out between fans attending the match at Querétaro’s stadium.[7] Video posted on social media showed groups of men beating, kicking, dragging and stripping victims.[8] According to the Querétaro state civil protection agency, at least 22 men were injured.[9] League play for the following day was suspended,[10] and the next Monday, five officials from the police and civil defence were suspended, the private company who were hired by the club would also have its contracts cancelled, and a ban on attending away games may be imposed on Querétaro fans.[11]

Five years later that stadium is finally open again to home fans after their tragic riot in March of 2022. Did Covid-19 bring this lack of respect for fellow man? Or is their more at play here?

I only picked these examples from Mexico because futbol is the sport of Mexico and of the world. The passion for one’s town and home team is the same as the NFL in the Estados Unidos. When there is passion there can also be a boiling point. May we learn to play for the sake of play. May we learn dialogue over war. Let’s get back to learning and playing together in this world.
